The story of three children who find themselves with a friendly monster that grows at an alarming rate.
Three young, diverse friends (played by Jahi Di'Allo Winston of "Everything Sucks!", Izabela Vidovic of "Wonder" and Chance Perdomo from "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina") find an unusual egg during a school field trip. They smuggle it home and keep it safe in Izabela's grandparents' pond in the bustling suburb of Highgate.
The egg hatches into an eco-friendly monster, playfully named 'Pondzilla' which grows at an alarming rate, feeding on litter and pollutants in the environment. The trio then faces a moral dilemma - to expose the newly developed creature for their own fame or protect its existence for the sake of mother nature.
As they navigate through this journey, they must juggle school, friendships and their own personal issues. Chance Perdomo's character deals with coming out as gay while being the target of bullies, subtly raising awareness about LGBTQ+ rights. Their adventure takes a serious turn when a wealthy business tycoon (Brendan Gleeson), wants to exploit Pondzilla for commercial gains, posing a threat to the ecosystem.
In a surprising twist, the kids realize Pondzilla is capable of reproducing. With the help of their science teacher, played by original cast member Michael Wade in a nostalgic cameo, they devise a plan to create more monsters like Pondzilla in a bid to help clean up the planet.
This timely update of the original 1961 classic adds modern contexts such as environmental themes, social issues, diverse casting, and expanded female roles for today's audience. Despite the tonal shifts and modernized settings, the story retains its classic charm, making it a homage to the original rather than a simple reboot.
