As the railroad builders advance unstoppably through the Arizona desert on their way to the sea, Jill arrives in the small town of Flagstone with the intention of starting a new life.
In an updated twist of "Once Upon a Time in the West", the movie is set against the backdrop of a modern geopolitical climate involving oil mining rights. College professor Jill (Gugu Mbatha-Raw, known for The Morning Show), inherits an oil field from her mysteriously murdered brother, rebuffing corporate offers to buy it out, believes the land holds more significant value.
Intimidating businessman Morton (John Hawkes, known for Winter's Bone) who is relentless in his pursuit to control the oil market and backed by dangerous mercenary Frank (Christina Hendricks gender swapped here, Mad Men fame) won't hesitate to eliminate anyone standing in their way.
Jill's only allies are Cheyenne (Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out), a wrongfully accused local activist fighting against industrial corporatism, and Harmonica (Rami Malek, Mr. Robot fame), a gay environmental lawyer with a mysterious past and a score to settle, introducing LGBTQ+ themes and enhanced female character roles. These issues are at the forefront as they unite to protect their land and identities.
This adventurous western tale also highlights the devastating impacts of oil mining on the environment. The original film's famous actor Charles Bronson makes a brief cameo appearance, activating nostalgia amongst fans. With the modern setting, diverse casting, and dealing with pressing social issues, it’s an empowering saga that beautifully interweaves the old with the new while keeping its classic essence alive.
