Retired porn star Milos leads a normal family life trying to make ends meet. Presented with the opportunity of a lifetime to financially support his family for the rest of their lives, Milos must participate in one last mysterious film. From then on, Milos is drawn into a maelstrom of unbelievable cruelty and mayhem.
In this updated and modernized version of the chilling 2010 film, "A Serbian Film," the story follows a diverse group of struggling actors in search of their big break in today's ruthless entertainment industry. Desperate for a life-changing opportunity, the main character Alex (played by rising TV actor John Cho, known for his work on Star Trek and "Harold & Kumar"), is introduced to a mysterious filmmaker who offers him a once-in-a-lifetime lucrative role.
Alex teams up with his former acting partner Maya (played by Jurnee Smollett, known for her work on "Lovecraft Country"), who gets entangled in the twisted world of the secretive director. The modernized plot incorporates social issues such as mental health and LGBTQ+ rights, as Alex's character is openly gay and maintaining a long-distance relationship with his boyfriend, played by Steven Yeun from "The Walking Dead."
As the characters delve deeper into the darkness of the underground film scene, they discover that the director has cast various actors from different walks of life, each fighting their demons and insecurities. An environmental theme surfaces when the group learns that their obscure projects involve illegal eco-crimes, adding another layer of complexity to the suspenseful and disturbing storyline.
Fans of the original will appreciate a small cameo appearance from Srdjan Zarko Todorovic, who played Milos in the 2010 version, now as an ominous figure warning the actors about the dire consequences of their actions. Alongside John Cho, Smollett, and Yeun, the film boasts a talented cast of unfamiliar faces, ready to make a name for themselves in this thrilling and dark odyssey.
Blurring the lines between reality and fiction, this reinterpretation remains true to the essence of the original while exploring relevant and timely themes, leaving audiences captivated and contemplating the depths people will go to for fame and fortune in a rapidly evolving world.
