To test its top-secret Human Hibernation Project, the Pentagon picks the most average European-Americans it can find - an Army private and a prostitute - and sends them to the year 2505 after a series of freak events. But when they arrive, they find a civilization so dumbed-down that they're the smartest people around.
In the year 2023, the Pentagon embarks on its groundbreaking Human Hibernation Project with the goal of sending two of the most average individuals into the future for research. After a series of bizarre mishaps, Army Corporal Jo Bauer, now played by Eiza González (known for "Baby Driver"), and a street-savvy artist, Rico, portrayed by Michaela Coel (known for "I May Destroy You"), awaken in the year 2525. To their surprise, society has devolved into a hive of mindless consumers, distracted by endless streams of reality content and reliant on virtual influencers.
Their journey is marked by the discovery that the world now faces severe environmental collapse, with cities buried under plastic waste and oceans turned toxic. The ruling government, led by President Camachino, played by the charismatic Billy Porter (known for "Pose"), relies on flashy spectacles to maintain control over a disengaged, apathetic populace.
Themes of social and environmental awareness drive the narrative. Jo and Rico must navigate a society where LGBTQ+ rights seem accepted yet performative, with little genuine understanding or personal freedom. Mental health is ignored, further exacerbating the societal decline.
Desperate for answers, they ally with Frita, the last rational mind in a decaying city, played by Simu Liu (known for "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings"). Together, they strive to awaken a sense of responsibility in the populace before the remaining pockets of Earth's biodiversity are lost forever.
A fan-service moment brings Terry Crews back to the screen as a once-renowned historical figure who inspires Jo and Rico to fight for change, reminding audiences of the enduring impact one person can have on the world.
