Young teen Mikey Walsh and his friends set off on a quest to find Pirate One-Eyed Willie's treasure in hopes of saving their homes from demolition. However, on their quest to find the treasure, they run into a family of recently escaped criminals, determined to capture the kids and reach the treasure first.
In an updated version of the classic adventure film, a diverse group of friends, each facing their own personal issues, bands together for one last epic adventure before their neighborhood is taken over by developers. The team includes Max (played by Jaeden Martell, known for "IT" and "Knives Out"), a tech-savvy leader with a big heart; Jules (played by Sophia Lillis, known for "IT" and "Gretel & Hansel"), Max's equally smart, resourceful, and environmentally conscious sister; Lucas (played by Caleb McLaughlin, known for "Stranger Things"), the group's athletic and loyal companion; Asher (played by Joshua Rush, known for "Andi Mack" and being an LGBTQ+ activist), a quirky artist who comes out as gay to his friends during their quest; and Miya (played by Haley Tju, known for "Bella and the Bulldogs"), a sarcastic yet empathetic outsider.
As they dive into an exhilarating escapade, the group uncovers a hidden underground world, complete with dangerous traps, puzzles, and fantastical creatures. Racing against time and greedy developers, they must piece together clues left behind by a legendary pirate named One-Eyed Wilma. Throughout their journey, the friends confront themes such as mental health, LGBTQ+ rights, and environmental concerns, pushing them to learn valuable lessons about themselves and the world around them.
In addition to updated references, jokes, and language, the film incorporates fresh perspectives with gender-swapped characters, including One-Eyed Wilma and a new villain, the ruthless developer Evelyn Greystone (played by Charlize Theron, known for "Atomic Blonde" and "Mad Max: Fury Road"). Look out for original cast members' surprise cameos throughout the film, adding a nostalgic touch for fans of the 1985 classic.
